Armyghost had trailed from camp, and it was a now rare night when it was pretty clear. The moonlight lit the way to the Aurora Clearing, where Armyghost was heading to. He couldn't get to sleep. If he did, he would only relive the haunting of Ray's death. Besides, he promised Nancy he would train her up as she asked.
At the end of the world,
Or of the last thing I see,
You are
Armyghost padded into the clearing, his mud colored fur glowing dimly in the moonlight. Padding to the center, he sat down. His long tail curled around his paws, and his head was back as his dark green orbs were gazing at the stars. The memory replayed again in his mind.
Never coming home,
Never coming home
Armyghost, Mikey back then, was standing beside Ray, his muscles bunched, prepared to leap into the gunfire and battle. A dog howled, signaling them to go. Mikey and Ray, side by side, jumped, sprinting into the clearing, careful not to get hit by the dangerous bullets or get trampled by the twolegs in uniform. "Mikey, look out behind you!" Ray shouted over the noise, and Mikey whipped around, just in time to avoid being tackled by a fierce dog. It ran off, colliding with a different dog. "Thanks." Mikey thanked his brother, before arching his back, snarling threateningly at a young-looking tom who approched him. The tom hissed, pouncing onto Mikey.
Could I? Should I?
Ray ripped the tomcat off of Mikey, and the two were side by side, snarling at the younger cat. Not wanting to take on two older cats, the tom turned and fled. Ray gave a triumphant yowl. Hearing small exploding things being thrown, Mikey and Ray ran to their side of the field. Larger guns were firing now, so they had to be careful when running. Mikey saw a quick chance, and dashed across the clearing, standing beside a small mound of soil. He turned around, anxiously waiting for Ray. Ray chose his moment, and started to run. About halfway across, he collapsed to the ground. "RAY!!" Mikey screamed, and tried to run to his brother, but two cats from his side pinned him down. "Mikey, you'll get killed out there!" One of them told him. Mikey fought against the two, wanting so desperately to go to his brother. One of the healing cats ran over to Ray, and applied some herbs to the wound, trying to heal Mikey's brother. "Ray!!!" Mikey yelled again. The healing cat stood, her facial expression having grief. Mikey knew immediately what was wrong: Ray didn't make it. He died. "RAY!!" Mikey felt the two cats release him, and he got to his paws, but didn't move. His mouth open, dark green eyes empty, the excitement of battle gone from him. He kept staring at Ray's lifeless body, unable to move.
And all the things that you never ever told me......
Armyghost's dark green gaze remained on the stars, his eyes full of pain. He wondered if Ray had a star, up in Silverpelt. "Ray..." He murmured, and he felt a pelt brush against his. Out of the corner of his eye, Armyghost saw a familiar dark brown pelt with a lean body, like that of Armyghost's. "Ray?" He turned his head fully, and was looking at a faded dark brown body--the figure of Ray, smiling, his navy blue eyes alight with his normal mischevious gleam.
And all the smiles that are ever gonna haunt me.....
Armyghost blinked, and his brother was gone. "Ray?" He whispered, the feeling of his brother beside him vanished. He looked back up at the sky, and saw one particular star shine brightly than the others. He had forgotten, for the time being, about Nancy coming.
