The forest was ashy and dead. Not much grew here, because it was all dead, but two cats made their way through the forest, a mother, and her kit. They looked almost exactly like one another, the same creamy pelts, and blue eyes, and yet somehow the kit in her fluffy kitten fur, looked like she would grow to become even more beautiful than her mother. Luna looked around her as they stopped to rest. "Mama.... why are we stopping here? This place is creepy!" She mewed. She saw how the only things growing here were mushrooms and some pale shoots of grass, all that remained after the scars of the fire that had so obviously destroyed what was probably once a beautiful forest.
Luna saw a patch of brambles nearby. She thought she saw the top branches quiver, but she shrugged it off as the wind and turned to nurse from her mother, who had lain down among the roots of a tree. Midnight began to hum softly to her kit to put her to sleep.
Suddenly, there was a snarl and Midnight's head shot up as a fox pushed it's way through the brambles. It was so starving that Midnight could see every one of the fox's ribs, and she cursed silently to the wind blowing at her back and carrying her milky scents away, not letting her smell the danger that was so near.
Midnight jumped to her feet and whipped her kit under the shelter of a few tree roots which had reared part of their selves into the air and created a small chasm between them and the ground big enough for a rabbit to make it's warren. Midnight hissed furiously as the fox snapped it's jaws at her and she leaped on top of the tree root which Luna was hiding under.
The fox began to dig at the root, still snarling and snuffling as Midnight gave a catarwaul and leaped down on top of the fox's bony shoulders. She raked her claws through the red, unkempt fur and the fox yelped, wheeling around to grab hold of Midnight. Luna watched as her mother fought the fox into the screen of brambles with her vicious claws and the sound of her screeching voice. Luna thought for one moment that Midnight was going to win, and she took a few steps out from under the tree root to cheer her on...
As Luna did this, the fox, which had rolled onto his back in the tussle with Midnight, battered her belly and threw her off. He Caught her in midair with his fangs around her neck and snapped down, shaking her like a ragdoll before tossing her into the very same tree that Luna was hiding under. Luna squeaked at the sickening thud which signaled that her mother had hit the tree, and then fallen to the ground, her blood seeping over the ash.
The fox turned and, as though it had suddenly decided it wasn't hungry, turned and ran off. At first, Luna couldn't believe that her mother had died. She scampered over to her mother's body and placed her paws on her mothers side. "Mama?" She mewed, softly. The fur was already cold and her mother's body was becoming stiff with death. "Mama, wake up!" She insisted, shaking her mothers side with her tiny paws. "Mama, please... wake up, we have to get out of here!" the world was turning blurry with her tears, she didn't even notice the other cats that were coming into the clearing.

Flamestar dashed into the clearing, senses fully alert. He had heard snarling and hissing while on patrol at the nearby border. Almost immediately, the coppery scent of blood hit his maw, while at the same time, he spotted the body of a cat with a small figure on top of it, shaking it. He made his way slowly, instinctively knowing that the larger figure was dead. As he neared, he scented something else besides blood. A fox! Quickly, he ordered all the other warriors beside him to follow it and chase it out of the territory or kill it. When they left, he approached what he now realized was a kit cautiously, staying a few tail-lengths away, unsure how to deal with the situation. He decided to wait, watching the kit intently.

Luna turned to look at the newcomers and wailed aloud. "Mama, please wake up!" She said, tears now falling down her cheeks and dripping onto the ash beneath her. She kept shaking her mother's shoulder in the hopes that she would blink, or say something. Finally, as she heard the other cats rush off through the trees, she pushed her way under her mom's outstretched paw and curled up there as if seeking protection from the dead body. She looked up at the cat that remained, her pretty blue eyes fearful.
"... Who are you?" She mewed, her voice still filled with grief.

Flamestar watched the kit sadly. It was hard to lose a parent at such a young age. He thought of how to explain to the kit that her mother was dead, but he realized that she might already know that, and saying it might just strengthen her grief. So he waited in silence until the kit spoke. "I am Flamestar." he said, choosing his next words carefully, " It will be okay little one. We will care for you, if you want. Your mother walks in Silverpelt now, but she will always watch over you." he said, motioning to the sky with his tail.

Luna looked down at her paws. "I.... I will go with you... but will you bury my mom? I don't want that fox to come back and.... and eat her." She mewed, creeping out from underneath her mother's leg and twining her body around his front leg inside, as if seeking shelter in the warmth of his belly fur. As all kits would when losing a parent this early in life, she was seeking protection from a cat that was alive, when she was recently made to be lost and all alone in a cold, cruel world. The tom cat could feel her terrified heartbeat racing in her chest and her whole body was shaking. She was still crying, but she tried not to look at her mother's body and instead looked up at him. Unconsciously, she felt power thrumming through this cat, and she felt instantly that she could trust him. She fixed him with an intense sapphire blue gaze and it seemed almost as though she were trying to read his thoughts.
"I-I'm Luna." She mewed, finally deciding that he meant her no harm.

Flamestar did not react as the kit cuddled against him. It reminded him of his own son, Blazingpaw, when he himself was a kit. "I am Flamestar. Leader of BlazeClan." He tried to shelter the kit with his body as much as possible, in case the fox came back, trying to comfort her as much as possible. Eventually one of the warriors came back, reporting that the rest of the patrol was still chasing the fox out of the territory. He hoped that it would not go into FernClan territory, worry churning in his belly for his other two kits in FernClan. When the rest of the patrol came back, telling him that they had killed the fox, he told them to carry the body of the kit's mother back to the camp for a proper burial. Untangling himself from Luna, he led the way back to camp, making sure that Luna stayed right beside him.

Luna tried hard to keep up with the tom, not complaining, even when she tripped and stumbled over the undergrowth when they left the dead forest. Luna seemed to be around 5 moons old, had she been born a clan cat, she'd be around apprenticing age. The pretty, cream-colored Grey striped tabby kitten fur was just beginning to smooth out. In another moon, she'd be the most gorgeous, albeit young, apprentice in BlazeClan. Luna looked up at him as they walked, she noticed he was being very considerate in matching her pace so that she would not become overtired on their journey. "What's BlazeClan?" She mewed, curiosity as to what he'd said earlier- about being a leader of this Blaze... thing- sparked in her deep blue eyes and in her tone of voice.
There were purrs of amusement from the other cats walking behind them, even the cats that were carrying her mother and looking very grave as they bore her body towards their clan camp, couldn't help but twitch their whiskers at how the kit seemed to have forgotten her mother had died. They knew that this wasn't the case, Luna was just acting brave in the face of tragedy, an admirable effort in such a young cat. Luna was trying not to think of the fact that she was an orphan now, or hear the scraping noise as her mothers tail dragged in the dust, leaving a furrow trail behind them.

"This, " Flamestar swept his paw across the territory, "is BlazeClan." Padding towards the center of the clearing, Flamestar gathered power on his haunches, and leaped onto the high rock, a huge boulder situated in the center of the clearing. "All cats old enough to gather their own prey gather beneath the High Rock for a meeting." he yowled, letting his voice echo throughout the camp. When a sufficient amount of cats had gathered, he continued. " Today this young kit has been orphaned because of a fox in our territory. The fox has been properly dealt with, and Luna, " he pointed his tail at her, " has accepted my invitation to join the clan. Now, this cat is of age to become an apprentice. So from this moment on, until you earn your warrior name, you shall be known as Lunapaw. Your mentor shall be Blackmist."
Blackmist padded over to the high rock to acknowledge his new apprentice, surprised to be chosen as a mentor.
"I hope you will pass on your knowledge and skills onto this apprentice, and teach her the ways of the warrior code." Flamestar said.

ooc- May my character become an apprentice too? Maybe they can train together! :]
ic-
A sturdy black tom raised his head from where he lay curled in the corner of the clearing, and watched as Flamestar leaped onto the high rock. A pretty silvery-white she-cat padded into camp after him, and he watched her, intrigued. She looked like a loner, but yet her pelt looked so clean and glossy. The tom's tail swished across the dirt behind him, and the white crescent on his forehead appeared to glow slightly for a moment, just as his curiosity sparked within him.
Raising into a sitting position, Midnight cracked his jaws open in a yawn as Flamestar called the clan for a meeting. He got to his paws and trudged towards the center of camp. When his leader spoke the stranger's name, he couldn't help but notice how well it suited her. Luna... she did look like a creature of the stars. Her pelt resembled something he would see on a moonlit night, bathed in pearly silver light.
The charcoal tom smiled as she received her apprentice name, and padded up to the newly named Lunapaw. Midnight flashed her a friendly smile, "Congratulations Lunapaw! You know, I was a loner once too, and I know how hard it is to fit into a strange clan. I'm sure you'll do great as an apprentice here." He dipped his head respectfully, and then took a few steps back, allowing other cats to pass on their congratulations, and curious glances as well.

Lunapaw shook her head slightly, scared by what was happening around her. She wasn't used to being around so many cats, and to be frank, it spooked her. When Flamestar called her by her apprentice name, she wasn't very sure she liked the idea of being an apprentice in a Clan when she had no idea what it was. She looked up at the cat that was supposed to be her mentor and when he came towards her, she squeaked and pressed herself into the earth, shaking.
What is he going to do to me? She thought, closing her eyes tight as the tom bent over her head. She waited for something to happen, she was convinced he might try to eat her, or worse, so when he touched his nose to her forehead, she squealed like she was dying even though nothing happened. After a moment, the nose went away and she blinked her eyes open... "Huh?" She said, looking up at the tom which was still there. She saw his eyes were filled with amusement.
Embarrassment shook her to the core and she flattened her ears as another cat came up to talk to her and said that he was once a loner as well... she shook her head. Loner? She wasn't a loner... "I'm NOT a loner." She mewed, looking up at him. "I... and my mom, come from RainClan." She said, the crowd went silent as she spoke. She was surprised that Flamestar had made her an apprentice before he had heard her story.
Bunching up her muscles, she leaped up onto the highrock beside him and twitched her ears for permission to speak to the clan about where she and her mother came from. She had to warn these cats before the same thing happened here.
"Flamestar, I am not a loner, and I have something to tell you. I come from a clan far away from here, A clan that lived on the other side of the mountains where a rich, alpine forest flourished, and the cats there were strong and could leap from rock to rock easily in the sparse undergrowth. We were RainClan, for it rained so much there, not a day went by in Newleaf and Greenleaf in which it did not rain. I was born there, but tragedy has destroyed my home. Wolves attacked our camp 3 moons ago. If you don't know what wolves are, they are like dogs, but they're bigger than badgers, wilder than foxes, meaner than bears, and they have no twolegs. They hunt for their food just like we do and they fight in bloodthirsty packs." Lunapaw's pelt was bristling as she remembered.
"Me, and my mother Midnight, were the only one's to survive the massacre. The wolves are far away from here now, but they travel fast, and nothing can overcome their great thirst for blood. Sooner or later, I know... they'll come here. We're nothing but mice to them. I and my mom were traveling through these territories and would have found another place to live, but.... she died." Lunapaw looked down at her paws at the end of her story, she hoped she had said the right things. Then she remembered something else and looked up again.
"If you scent one, they smell close to the same scent that dogs carry, but they have a rawness.... a scent of blood and flesh that dog's don't carry and there's not a trace of twolegs tainting their pelts." Lunapaw mewed. Secretly, she thought of how if a cat did scent a wolf, it'd be the last thing they ever did, since she reflected that a wolf's sense of smell was 10 times better than a cat's.

Flamestar's ears twitched, registering surprise. He definitely did not know that there were any other clans besides the ten clans. He listened intently to Lunapaw's story. Wolves? It was the first time he had heard of such creatures. The only other deadly animals he knew were foxes, badgers, snakes, and scorpions. He waited until she finished before he spoke, "Thank you for the useful information about the wolves Lunapaw. I will be sure to send out extra patrols, in case they really come." he meowed reassuringly.
He spotted a face in the crowd, a black tom in the center of the clearing. He remembered that the tom was due to be an apprentice. " Midnight, please come forward. " he paused, waiting for him to do so, " You are now of age to become an apprentice. Therefore, until you earn your warrior name, you shall be known as Midnightpaw. I will be your mentor." he finished.

Lunapaw looked at Flamestar and nodded. She flicked her tail to get his attention after the naming ceremony and mewed softly. "There's more, but I can't say it without sending the clan in a total panic. I need to talk to you alone." She scrambled down off the high rock with a graceful leap evident of her ancestors and twitched her tail, waiting for Flamestar to join her as she padded after his scent trail to the den he obviously slept in.
Lunapaw waited for him to accompany her before she entered his den and when they were both inside, she went on with the rest of her story. "I could tell by your reaction you don't know what Wolves are. As I said, they are a lot like wild dogs, they look a lot like foxes in that their fur is thick and long, but it's in different colors like ours can be. One wolf can be black while another is grey, and another is a tortoiseshell..." She mewed, remembering the night they attacked. She had been barely 2 moons old then. She was scratching an image in the floor of the cave, drawing out what her mind pictured. Soon the image of a creature that looked like a dog with a long pointed fox's muzzle, big ears, long slender legs and long, sharp fangs emerged in the sand. It had a bushy tail, and a savage look in it's eyes that told of an insatiable hunger.
"The terrifying thing about these creatures is their sense of smell... it's 10 times superior to ours, that's how they attacked my home. There were 4 of them, two grays, a white and a brown one, all of them had glowing amber eyes, and they stalked us as if we were prey, keeping downwind of our camp so we never smelled them coming... I woke up to the sounds of screaming..." Lunapaw broke off, her whole body shuddered as she thought of what had happened.
"M-midnight, my mom, told me to stay in the nest of moss and don't move, wolves don't eat dead prey, they prefer to devour their food while it's still alive." Lunapaw's mew was hard with disgust as she said that. "There was no need, the wolves didn't even try to get inside the thicket, it was too thorny... I was the only kit in the clan at the time, and my mom wanted nothing but to protect me, so she wouldn't leave my side.... we sat there all night, listening to the dreadful snarling and the screams of our dying clan...." Another shudder racked her body.
"2 days passed and finally, the wolves left, and me and my mom dared to leave the shelter of the thicket." Here, Lunapaw's voice dropped to a whisper, "The sight was horrible.... the warriors bramble was in shreds, the apprentice's bush had been dug up, blood was everywhere, and no matter where I looked, there were the bodies of my Clan mates. Every. Single. One of them had been ripped to pieces and left to rot. The wolves had not come to eat... they had come for sport." Lunapaw looked down at the image now scratched into the sand and looked away, her tail bristling to twice it's size out of terror, and her ears lain flat against her head.

Flamestar followed Lunapaw, signaling to the clan that the meeting was over. Once they were inside, He listened to the rest of her story, stiffening at the gory parts. How could an animal be so cruel? The most violent creature he had ever faced was a dog. But dogs would never eat cats, much less attack a whole clan. He wondered how Lunapaw dealt with the memories, especially now that her mother was just killed. He felt sympathy for the kit, using his tail to smoothen her bristling fur. "We will be extra cautious. If a wolf so much as sets a paw on our territory...." he let the sentence trail off. He would do everything in his power to protect his clan mates. " Now, you need some rest. If you're hungry, you may take something from the fresh kill pile."

Lunapaw nodded and relaxed a little when he touched the tip of his tail on her shoulder. She sighed and stood up on her paws to leave. "Thanks, Flamestar. I'm glad to let you know what dangers may come here." She left the den, but she didn't feel like eating even if she was hungry. She went to where the apprentice's den was supposed to be, and crawled inside wanting nothing more than to curl up and sleep where she stood, but she had enough energy to scratch up a nest of moss for herself and curl up among the other apprentices. She didn't even know their names yet.

|| Put all your walls up and open your windows And close all your doors
As the newcomer looked up at him with embarrassment burning through her frame, Midnight did something he didn't often do: he flinched. He was a quiet tom, and usually minded his own. But he wasn't shy or sensitive; no, he just usually didn't like company. He knew what attachments could do to a cat if they were suddenly cut away. But as this she-cat bristled at what he thought was a warm welcome, he couldn't help but narrow his eyes and become defensive. "I'm not a loner," the fierce little apprentice hissed at him. Midnight became confused. What was wrong with being a loner? The clan had accepted him, and her as well, assuming that they both had been loners. What a priss he immediately thought, the fur on his neck bristling. Lunapaw leaped onto the highrock and yowled out news like she was a leader. Midnight's skin burned with outrage. How dare she stand in Flamestar's spot. Nothing but an apprentice!
|| What do you wish for? To catch you as you're falling?
The whole clan suddenly became hushed as she spoke of different clans, and strange, gargantuan monsters. Midnight smiled bitterly, his ears flattening as he remembered his old home. He had known cats and creatures that had seemed to have come out of hell itself. Midnight was no stranger to death; in fact, Death was his older brother, and Sin his sister.
Midnight's expression changed as Flamestar brushed her announcement off like it was a kit's warning. For Dreamclan's sake, she barely was one herself. That'll teach her to try and lead the clan, Midnight thought, a small growl of approval leaving his throat at Flamestar's gentle assurance of patrols. The jet tom blinked in surprise as the leader named him an apprentice, and his own apprentice at that!
|| I wouldn't want to be you This lonely game that you play Between your walls you confuse
He quickly regained his composure, and gave a small dip of the head. After Lunapaw's rejection, his heart soared thinking that at least his leader thought he amounted to something more than a filthy loner. "Thank you Flamestar, I won't let you down." His black pelt glistened in the sunlight, matching his eager indigo eyes. He couldn't wait to start training. A wicked grin spread across his face. He couldn't wait to be Lunapaw's toughest rival.
|| Every heart that you break So afraid that you'll lose
Midnightpaw watched as Lunapaw and his new mentor entered the leader's den. His curiosity was sparked. What did she need to say to Flamestar that she hadn't already boldly howled to the whole clan? He crept closer to the den; not close enough to make out the actual words of the conversation, but close enough to hear the tones of their meows. The young tom settled in the shade of a twisted Ash tree a little ways away, and his tail twitched in surprise as the fiery young she-cat sounded quite terrified. He didn't know what was going on, but her tone did not sound good. Midnightpaw's gaze hardened. If she had brought trouble to his home, there would be hell to pay.
|| Always a void to replace I wouldn't want to play you
He saw her leave the den, struggling to make her bristling fur lie flat. Midnightpaw's eyes followed her, showing no expression but intrigue. Although her reaction to him had been quite insulting, the nosy part of him couldn't help but wonder what world the new apprentice had come from. It must have been as dark as his, because she was like a pretty little time-bomb, waiting to explode on the next attacker. He snatched up some fresh kill for dinner; a plump little mouse. Padding to the Ash tree again, he flopped down on the ground with his meal. After neatly devouring the prey, he tossed it's bones into a small pit he'd dug. Suddenly, a thought hit him. Maybe now that he was an apprentice, he was allowed in a den with other cats? He'd been waiting for this moment for a long time.
|| You try and pretend, the truth is hard to bend How easy these translations can be read
He was so nervous as he ducked into the apprentice's den that he, for a moment, had completely forgotten Lunapaw was there. As his mauve gems met with her icy blue ones, he almost flinched again. Managing to merely blink in surprise, he swished his tail back and forth in irritation. She was just as new to this den as he was, although he'd been here for a lot longer. Mightnightpaw cast her a devious grin, and winked at her slyly as he growled softly, "See you tomorrow at training, Lunapaw. You'll have to work hard to beat me." He curled up in a small nest of moss, his back to her, and slowly began to drift off to sleep. He couldn't wait to compete with the young female tomorrow, he was ready to show her up.
|| What if you were led to play a different game instead How hard these frustrations are to mend
Does it matter to you?
